Gum Arabic: is a natural gum made of the hardened sap of various species of the acacia tree. In the present day, gum arabic is predominantly collected from two related species, namely Acacia senegal  and Vachellia Acacia seyal. Producers harvest the gum commercially from wild trees, mostly in Sudan (80%) and throughout the Sahel, from Senegal through Tchad to Somalia—though it is historically cultivated in Arabia and West Asia.

Gum arabic is a complex mixture of glycoproteins and polysaccharides. It is the original source of the sugars arabinose and ribose, both of which were first discovered and isolated from it, and are named after it.

Gum arabic is used primarily in the food industry as a stabilizer. It is edible and has E number E414. Gum arabic is a key ingredient in traditional lithography and is used in printing, paint production, glue, cosmetics and various industrial applications, including viscosity control in inks and in textile industries, though less expensive materials compete with it for many of these roles also, it is used as a binder in pyrotechnic compositions. Pharmaceutical drugs and cosmetics also use the gum as a binder

Trade information’s on Gum Arabic: Although the Grade 1 is hardly found in Nigeria but the Grade 2 and 3 is available. Most of the Grade 1 comes from Tchad and northern part of Cameroon to Nigeria. This also involves a lot of capital for young entrepreneur but is highly profitable. Sudan produces largest quantity in Africa follow by Senegal.

Grading can be actualized by visual and hand for the professionals as a novice doesn’t always know the different between the 3 grades available. Most of the time, the grade 3 contains too many back of the acacia trees during harvest. A ton of this commodity can moves from $1700-$3000 at the peak of the season.

Trading season start by early November and end early March but the stock is always available and you can get it from big merchant that has warehousing facility. It’s edible in a raw form.
